To Music or Not to Music

This week I started editing properly for the first time, and looking through my footage I was pulling out bits and bobs from the warehouse and found that the backing sounds to general warehouse scenes always sounded completely different due to the constant presence of music throughout the weekend. This meant that short snippets didn't really go well together without some sort of harmonising background sound, be that voices from an interview or potentially music. I have been wary to use music as I don't want it to detract from the feel of the film and make it more commercial, however music was such a big part of the atmosphere all weekend I also felt like it should be present. In this way I have been conflicted! Another issue with using music is keeping it low enough at certain times to keep any dialogue still audible but at a level that can easily brought back in without it sounding funny - this is something I still need to play around with quite a lot.

During the weekend, there was music played through speakers from all over the world, setting a particular scene - always very upbeat and cheerful. In this way, it would seem a shame to remove this element in my film. At one occasion, one track seemed to resonate with lots of groups of people and stuck with me the most looking back and at the time, so I asked what it was and made a note of it on my phone. This was Sarabi - Koko's Vibration. For this reason I chose to use it as an opening and introduction in setting the scene for the warehouse. Another song, U-Roy - Natty Rebel I was already familiar with, was playing in the background of a particular scene that features quite prominently in the film at the sorting table. However, this clip with the song in the background wasn't right for the beginning of that scene so I couldn't fade it in from the actual footage unfortunately, yet still want to use this at this time.

So.. for these reasons, I have currently put these two tracks in my film, yet am fully open to feedback in my seminar next week, so this may change...
